Long before he revealed himself to us as a virtuoso of the photo-realistic, Maurizio Manzieri was a Shadowmarch subscriber and message board regular. In fact, you may know him eponymously from the popular where-have-they-been-lately message board game Where Have You Gone, Maurizio Manzieri? Maurizio is an award-winning artist known for his work on several professional science fiction and fantasy publications, including Interzone, The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, and The SFWA Bulletin. We're very pleased to bring you several new Shadowmarch "sketch" galleries by Maurizio. (This Manzieri guy sketches in the same way J.S. Bach hums a little ditty.) Enjoy! Matt

I first encountered Matt Rhodes' work when someone on one of the message boards posted a link to some sketches he'd done of my MS&T books characters, and I thought the look was really fresh and skillful and most unusual of all fun. Terrifyingly, he's still a teenager his upside seems unlimited. In fact, I hope one of the things people remember fondly about Shadowmarch is that's where they were first introduced to Matt Rhodes. I'm certainly not doing this because I'm the best artist we could get, or considering how many generous and talented volunteers we've had even the best artist we could afford. But as we decide where and how we're going to display Shadowmarch art in the post-Matt-Rhodes era, I thought it would be a chance for me to mess around a bit with something I love and miss doing. You'll notice I've taken a bit of a hip-hop approach to some of these pieces, "sampling" from photographs. I'm sure I'll try other things too before I let a real artist take over and I go back to being just the writer in other words, you're not going to see a uniform look from me. I haven't done much art in the last twenty years, so I'm playing around with all kinds forms and tools, many of which didn't exist when I was last doing anything serious, and more or less learning as I go. I'm having fun, too. (I only wish I had more time ...) Tad
